Fowey to Falmouth
Doris sashayed out of Mylor at 3am like a Grand Duchess exiting the Devonshire House Ball at dawn. There was nothing to hear but seagulls squawking over a silky, silent Fowey river. I pretty much always love our electric propulsion but that exquisite moment really brought home just how amazing it is - with a woman at the helm and almost complete silence it sometimes seems like she's powered by witchcraft ;-) Yes, it was another hideously early morning (apparently time and tides won't even wait for me - rude!) but this sailing business never promised office hours, and oh my goodness, it was so achingly beautiful that it was worth all the yawning.
The wind finally came at about 5am (where the the straight bit on the map stops marks when we had enough to let good ole Doris do what she was built for). Zephyrus then obviously decided we needed a good pace so he proceeded to bless us with enough wind that we had to beat* much of the way with a single reef in - an exhilarating ride to Falmouth, if a bit chilly.
*To beat: non-sailor translation - trying to sail in the exact direction the wind is coming from which forces you to zig-zag backwards and forwards feeling like you're going nowhere slowly, all the time wondering why the hell you didn't buy a motor boat?!
Bimbling DIY - the miracle that is kitchen paper
When I started this blog I did my homework and carefully looked into what's out there. After viewing way too many insta posts and youtube videos of beautiful young women casually explaining basic sailing terms whilst wearing bikinis made of dental floss I realised mine might be just a little different - especially regarding the apparel (gentle reader you can breathe a huge sigh of relief!). However, having supposedly started an adventure of a lifetime, even I am surprised to find myself writing about kitchen paper!
During the time we have been doing boat DIY I have come to realise how life on Doris has engendered in me a deep appreciation for this miraculously multipurpose magic mopper (recycled of course, we are 'would-be eco-warriors' afterall!).
Moon pool rubber seal leaking and needs fixing with locktite? It becomes vital 'leg hair protection' - let's face, it no-one ever wants a sticky patch of fur on an appendage do they?!
Propshaft lubrication pump re-plumbing? Suddenly you have a drip detector with thaumaturgical properties, as well as nice clean bilges once its finished.
It even works outside of DIY, one piece with dinner means forgetting that you're eating from a plastic bowl with a spoon at an angle in a gale as the superyacht hostess of your mind lays the table with silver cutlery and pressed linen napkins...... don't judge me, sleep deprivation from long passages does weird things to everyone.
For those of you wondering about the water maker (I just know you're on the edge of your seats), the marvellous Jeremy at Mylor Yacht Harbour fixed it in 30 minutes with locktite and yes, you guessed it, a good few sheets of the divine stuff.
Kitchen paper that vital boat accessory, you simply can't beat it - and spill your drink whilst we're beating?? I've got you covered.
Propshaft lubrication pump plumbing - kitchen paper centre stage
Moon pool seal - note the distinct lack of matted leg hair, thank you kitchen paper!
Beating to Falmouth
It was a little chilly even before Zephyrus blew!
A second career as a male model if the DIY doesn't work out perhaps?!
